“PHOTOGRAPHY 1952”

“PHOTOGRAPHY 1952” In that year was proud to have qualified as the first Queen Scout in Spore, selected to attend the Pan Pacific Jamboree in Greystane Sydney “downunder the land of immigrants” as the Aussie advertised calling for immigrants “to slave for them like immigrants” confounded elsewhere! I was proud to have participated but shocked to experience at the foodstall the0 roller shutter came down in the railway station where the train stopped long enough to buy dinner when we left Sydney for Melbourne with no dinner! That was “Aussie white policy against foreigners like Asians our Boy Scouts Contingent Leader told us! It happened again second time when five reps senior academic staff from SEA countries invited by the Aussie Govt to visit the Energy Generating Authority n had an Aussie as our chaperon. Very early we had to fly from Melbourne to Sydney n the Aussie chaperon told us no time for breakfast but could buy it at the airport. We got there, queued up infront of a foodstall led by the Aussie chaperon! When we reached the stall the shutter rolled down! The Aussie chaperon just raised both his hand n looked at us with a grim smile trying to say nothing could be done! That night in the Sydney hotel we stayed after dinner we watched the TV in the community room. Suddenly an announcement came on saying, “If anyone felt he has been discriminated he could ring this number to report.” I turned round to our Aussie chaperon n asked him, “Would you do that?” That was the incidence in Melbourne Airport. He was silent! That was 1985, thirty three years after the same experience in 1952 in Sheffield Railway Station! I was told by friends the same today but more subtle form. NOW TO PHOTOGRAPHY! My late mother, poor as she was bought n gave me a Kodak Baby Brownie to capture memories of the Pan-Pacific Jamboree. That started my passion for Photography in 1952. A fellow Queenscout of a richman son had a shining silvery Exakta 35mm Camera hanging by its straps from his neck! That was an envy! I owned one in 1969 after three years teaching as a Physics teacher! I really treasured it. I took it everywhere! Now what is Photography? As a Physicist PhD I like this definition. Quote: “Through photographs the world becomes a series of unrelated, free standing particles; and history, past n present, a set of anecdotes and faits divers. The camera makes reality atomic, manageable, and opaque.” More to continue.
